History

The Ornellaia Estate was founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori whose dream was to create a new, truly exceptional winery from a family property inherited from his mother.The estate once belonged to noble ´della Gherardesca´family and is located in an unspoiled area on Tuscany´s central coast.Inspired by his uncle´s experience in the neighboring estate of Sassicaia, Lodovico planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.The grapes wich would most benefit from the extraordinary natureOf the Estate´s “ terroir”.The dream becomes reality in 2001 when the US magazine “Wine Spectator” honored  Ornellaia 1998 as the number one wine in the world. Same award goes 2004 to the Masseto 2001.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia makes outstanding wines even in poor vintages - better than any other. In the capable hands of winemaker Thomas Duroux and consultant Michel Rolland, the estate continues its long-standing, stellar record of world-class wine production. Even the estate's "second" wines demonstrate high quality grape growing and flawless production methods. Located in Tuscany's tiny coastal DOC of Bolgheri, the estate was one of the first to plant vines in the area. With producers like Tenuta San Guido, Antinori Grattamacco, and Le Macchiole among others, Bolgheri is the hotbed of winemaking momentum in Toscana
