Angelo Gaja

Barolo & Barbaresco

Piedmount - Italy

About the Producer:
Perhaps the most influential individual in Italian wines over the last 30 years has been Angelo Gaja. In a relentless pursuit to show-off the best of Italy's cellars, Angelo has canvassed the globe. His exhaustive, door-to-door campaign has been a raging success. The world now knows the greatness of Barbaresco and Barolo, especially those bottles with his simple, black-and-white label. The Gaja name emblazoned in bold capital letters across the front embodies world-class quality.

Gaja’s primary 250-acre estate is located in the Barbaresco and Barolo districts of Piedmont. In 1994 Gaja purchased its first wine estate in Tuscany, Pieve Santa Restituta, of which 40-acres are planted with Sangiovese and produce two Brunello di Montalcino wines. In 1996 Gaja acquired a second Tuscan property called Ca’Marcanda located in Castagneto Carducci in Bolgheri. The focus at Ca’Marcanda is on international grape varieties, and the estate’s 150-acres are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah vines.

Strikingly profound and fit to live for decades, Gaja's wines display opulence and elegance. When collectors consider Italian wines for their cellar, Gaja is one of the first names they purchase. His wines (along with those of his father and grandfather) have a long-established track record, insuring that the wines will perform well when opened, as well as on the auction block.

Angelo has never been shy about breaking paradigms. He has moved far beyond the noble Nebbiolo, introducing Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings to his Piemontese line. Determined to stay at the forefront of the dynamic Italian wine scene he also owns the Pieve Santa Restituta winery in Montalcino producing the highly acclaimed Rennina and Sugarille Brunellos, as well as, the Super Tuscan estate in the Maremma district Ca' Marcanda.

Sori Tildin, Sori San Lorenzo, Costa Russi - Barbaresco:
Barbaresco is Angelo's masterpiece! With meticulous attention to detail, he brought Barbaresco to fame by reducing crop size, shortening fermentation periods, implementing innovative wine making techniques, aging wines in barrique and even sourcing timber to build his own barrels. His single vineyard Barbarescos - Sori Tildin, Sori San Lorenzo, and Costa Russi - are virtually unrivaled in their intensity and have achieved legendary status in the wine world.

Sperss – Barolo
The name means “nostalgia” in Italian and refers to a particular vineyard site where the Gaja family had purchased grapes until 1961. It was at this point the family began producing wines exclusively from their own vineyards and a series of changes began to unfold that would have a profound impact on Piemonte wines. Year in and year out, the Sperss exhibits huge, classicBarolo characteristics: ripe, expansive black cherry and strawberry fruit, truffles, earth and streaks of tar. Each vintage displays uncommon complexity and stature in these full-bodied, chewy, tannic bottlings. It should be noted that the 1999 Barolo Sperss received 99-points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
